Active Lane Departure Warning: New Benchmark with auto motor und sport

A lane departure warning system that annoys drivers gets switched off. And can no longer help when it really matters.

That is precisely what makes development so challenging. The system must intervene promptly and decisively when the driver is distracted. But it must not interfere during normal driving – and the driver must always be able to override it effortlessly.

In the fourth part of our ADAS benchmark series with auto motor und sport, we tested the active lane departure warning systems of the Audi Q3, BMW i5, Hyundai Ioniq 9, MG HS and VW Golf on motorways, federal highways and rural roads.

At 90 km/h, the differences become strikingly clear: While one system corrects the vehicle’s course 31 cm before reaching the center line during a test without driver steering input, another allows the vehicle to cross the line by 1.28 m before intervening. Same test scenario, completely different system responses.

But our benchmarking provides more than just a ranking. It gives us insights into how the systems operate: which lane widths influence their functionality, how strongly and for how long they intervene, how they respond to intentional lane marking crossings, and where their functional limits lie.

For OEMs and suppliers, this means: With our MXeval evaluation software, we analyze the collected benchmark data and combine it with our engineering expertise to derive concrete development and calibration measures. This enables us to support you in developing assistance systems that intervene reliably without causing unnecessary disturbance – giving drivers every reason to keep them switched on.
