Behavior Analysis of Drivers and Occupants for ADAS, FuSi, and UX

Eye Tracking and Body Motion Tracking for Safe and Intuitive Driving Functions

Eye tracking and body motion tracking make it visible how drivers and occupants perceive information and respond to driving functions. The insights gained form the basis for the targeted and data-driven further development of functional safety, HMI design, and user experience.

  • Did the driver perceive and understand the HMI display in time?
  • Does the driver recognize whether they are within or outside the operating limits (ODD – Operational Design Domain)?
  • How does gaze direction change during assisted driving?
  • Does the head movement of occupants, triggered by an automatic evasive maneuver, fall below critical interior clearances (e.g., distance to the B-pillar)?

To define requirements in the areas of functional safety (FuSi), ADAS, user experience (UX), and human–machine interface (HMI), as well as Euro NCAP requirements, vehicle developers face critical questions like these. Developing safe and intuitive vehicles requires a deep understanding of human behavior in different driving situations.

Our Approach to Behavioral Analysis

As part of iterative studies, we analyze how users perceive existing systems or new concepts. Participants are confronted with specific tasks in various scenarios tailored to the respective systems or concepts. The recording of eye and body movements (eye tracking and body motion tracking) is carried out precisely using objective measurement instruments to ensure a comprehensive analysis of the results.

These studies provide well-founded insights into human behavior and perception when using and operating a function. The data obtained serve as the basis for adjustments to requirements related to functional safety as well as HMI design.
