Expert and user feedback even before the first prototype

Experience ADAS and HMI Concepts Early Through Driving Simulator Studies

With the driving simulator, driver assistance systems and HMI concepts can be experienced together in a realistic setting at a very early stage of development – even before they are integrated into the vehicle. Benefit from early expert and customer feedback to optimize the acceptance, usability, and safety of your systems based on data.

  • How well do drivers understand and operate the various assistance systems (e.g., cruise control, lane keeping assist, parking assist)?
  • Do users trust assisted driving and feel supported?
  • Do your customers have difficulties operating or adjusting ADAS functions?
  • How intuitive are the controls, and are all essential functions easily accessible and visible?

If HMI concepts and controls do not realistically represent a function, this quickly leads to rejection of the driving function. Therefore, it is crucial to make HMI concepts and functions jointly experienceable in a simulation environment at a very early stage of development, when integration into the vehicle is not yet possible. This should be evaluated by experts such as function and HMI developers as well as by end customers. In this way, the insights gained can be directly incorporated into the development process, enabling data-driven strategic decisions. This approach results in a continuous increase in maturity from the concept phase to SOP (Start of Production) and promotes a human-centered development approach that ultimately leads to high market acceptance.

Efficient Concept Evaluation Through Expert and Customer Feedback in Driving Simulator Studies

Our driving simulator studies always consist of two parts: an expert evaluation and a customer evaluation. Over the past years, we have developed a multi-level model that enables us to compare the results of both groups and correlate them with objective measurement data. Using specifically developed KPIs, we translate subjective perceptions into objective data – and vice versa.
Through the use of static and dynamic driving simulators, these evaluations are conducted at an early stage of the development process. This significantly reduces on-road testing efforts and provides the foundation for efficiently assessing a broader range of concepts.

Key Applications of Our Driving Simulator Studies

Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): Test automated emergency braking systems, lane keeping assist systems, and adaptive cruise control in controlled environments before integrating them into real vehicles.

Vehicle Dynamics and Driving Behavior: Improve driving stability and safety by analyzing vehicle behavior under various conditions (e.g., different road surfaces, weather conditions).

Human–Machine Interaction (HMI): Evaluate the usability and functionality of your HMI systems, from the layout of controls to the vehicle’s response to driver inputs.

Why Driving Simulator Studies in Vehicle Development?

  • Optimization of Human–Machine Interaction (HMI): Complex driver–vehicle interactions are tested and optimized for usability, acceptance, and understanding before being deployed in production vehicles.
  • Variety of Test Scenarios: Driving simulators replicate a wide range of traffic scenarios and conditions, from extreme weather to complex or rare hazardous situations.
  • Safe Testing Environment: Driver assistance systems and automated driving functions are developed and validated in a safe environment under controlled conditions.
  • Data-Driven Development Decisions: By involving end customers and technical experts, real user experiences are directly incorporated into well-founded development decisions.
